In addition to directing Flamenco Chicago LLC, a flamenco dance studio with 70+ students, Rosetta Magdalen has been a member and/or soloist with several flamenco companies, including Soul y Duende Spanish Dance Theatre, Sueños de Fuego, and Alma Flamenca. She has been featured in the Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun-Times/Pioneer Press, Dance Teacher magazine, Gapers Block, Chicagoist, Beverly Review, and other publications. In July 2010, Flamenco Chicago was featured as “Chicago’s Best Flamenco Class” by Chicago’s Best on WGN-TV.
Rosetta has taught, performed and/or choreographed for Beverly Arts Center, Chicago Ballet Arts, Chicago Tap Theatre, Columbia College, DePaul University School of Music, Elmhurst College, Na’ama Rose Dance Center, and other area educational institutions. She has coached ballroom dancers on flamenco styling for paso doble, and also consults with actors and singers in the development of flamenco-related roles. In this capacity, she had coached actors in the plays “Summer and Smoke” and “Wintertime” and has coached sopranos in interpretation of the roles of Carmen and Mercedes in the opera “Carmen.” Rosetta has coached actors in two productions of the musical “Bernarda Alba”: for the Bohemian Theatre Ensemble and for the Columbia College Department of Musical Theatre.
Rosetta’s teaching is distinguished by having nearly a dozen of her students performing as flamenco dancers professionally and semi-professionally across the country. Her own training included study with many master teachers (both in the US and in Spain), a few of whom include Edo Sie, Dame Libby Komaiko, Ciro, La Tati, Carmela Greco, and Manuela Reyes.
Recently, several flamenco teachers in the Chicago area have followed Flamenco Chicago in mounting student showcases. It has been gratifying to note that many of the dancers performing in these showcases have received most or all of their elementary through advanced level flamenco training with Rosetta, studying with her for many years. Many of these students have also participated in professional performances with Rosetta and were coached by her to perform their first solos. It’s wonderful to see that Flamenco Chicago is so well-represented as a training center, and to have our students as the most talented and featured participants in flamenco showcases throughout the city.
Flamenco Chicago Productions has provided flamenco entertainment for corporate events, private parties, schools, and universities since 1999. Flamenco Chicago Studio celebrated its eighth anniversary in March 2011.
